The Italian Society of Synchrotron Radiation (SILS) in collaboration with ELETTRA-Sincrotrone Trieste SCpA organizes in September 2021 the first on-line edition of the School on Synchrotron Radiation “Gilberto Vlaic”: Fundamentals, Methods and Applications

This edition will be organized online due covid situation.

The school is dedicated to the memory of prof. Gilberto Vlaic, who founded in 1990 the first SILS school held in Sardinia that was followed by biannual editions till 2019. Prof. Vlaic was one of the pioneers of the X-ray absorption spectroscopy and contributed significantly to its development and its multiple applications.

The School will give a general overview of the characteristics and potentiality of synchrotron radiation to graduated students and young researchers interested in its use. The emission of synchrotron radiation both from the storage rings and from free electron lasers, its properties, most of the experimental methods used, their fundamentals and applications in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Science, Material Science and Medicine will be illustrated. Data analysis sessions, as well as experimental training on some of the ELETTRA beam-lines, are also foreseen.

The lecturers will be well known scientists with long standing experience on the use of synchrotron radiation in each specific topic; the lectures will be given in English.

IUCr support:

We have applied for support from the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr). If granted, the registration fee for some students from developing countries will be reduced to 50 €.

IUCr Scientific Freedom Policy Statement.

The Organising Committee of 1st on-line edition of the International School on Synchrotron Radiation, Fundamentals, Methods and Applications, organized by the Italian Synchrotron Radiation Society in collaboration with ELETTRA – Sincrotrone Trieste shall observe the basic policy of nondiscrimination and affirms the rights of scientists throughout the world to adhere or to associate with international scientific activity without regard to such factors as ethnic origin, religion, citizenship, language, political stance, gender, sex or age, in accordance with the Statues of the International Council for Science.  At this meeting no barriers will exist which would prevent the participation of bona fide scientists.

Statement on gender balance

The organizers are committed to fostering gender balance in the composition of the speakers and selection of the students in this on – line edition of the school and in the future ones, which will hopefully be held in person. In the present edition, there were 221 applications among which women were 48 %; 156 students were selected, among which women are 49 %, a very good gender balance. Concerning the speakers, 3 out of the 15 speakers are women; this rather small 20 % female composition is not uncommon in the hard sciences; we undertake to improve this in future editions of the school, a good target being at least 30%.
