Advancements in High-Resolution Imaging using Next-Generation Light Sources

FERMI (Free Electron laser Radiation for Multidisciplinary Investigations) is a seeded free electron laser (FEL) facility. Unique among FEL sources currently operating in the ultraviolet and soft X-ray range, FERMI provides fully coherent, ultrashort (10–100 femtosecond) pulses with a peak brightness ten billion times higher than third-generation light sources. FERMI offers unprecedented opportunities for exploring the structure and transient states of condensed matter, soft matter, and low-density matter using a variety of diffraction, scattering, and spectroscopy techniques.

This unique photon source has been used to implement structured illumination microscopy (SIM), creating sub-micrometer grating structures by exploiting extreme ultraviolet beams. This experimental tool holds great potential for visualizing details well beyond the resolution limit, achieving a spatial resolution of just a few nanometers.

The "Advancements in High-Resolution Imaging Using Next-Generation Light Sources" symposium aims to foster an in-depth discussion among internationally recognized experts in the field, exploring the potential of the FEL facility to drive new research directions.

This symposium will be hosted by Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste at the ICTP Adriatico Guesthouse from July 17 to July 18, 2025. No attendance fee is required for participants.
