Description
Quantum computing uses the interactions of quantum systems to model complex problems, with possible speed and complexity advantages over classical binary logic. This tutorial will begin with a quick overview of the idea and possible quantum systems. The main part of the tutorial will focus on superconducting qubits which are configured, controlled and read out using RF signals; technology requirements and typical controller architectures are laid out to motivate a presentation of the Quantum Instrumentation Control Kit (QICK) controller.
QICK, an open-source system developed at Fermilab, is based on the highly integrated Xilinx RFSoC platform, and it uses direct digital synthesis/downconversion methods in conjunction with a real-time processor capable of deterministic pulse scheduling and feedback to configure, control and read out systems of multiple qubits. The QICK development roadmap is presented to show how the flexible platform has expanded to hundreds of academic labs worldwide, is beginning to make an impact in industry, and plans to scale up to hundreds of qubits. The tutorial concludes with insghts on where the field might be in 5 or 10 years, as well as the upcoming challenges for larger, more complex systems.
